500 Word Free Writing Challenge

Today’s challenge is to free write, to just write and not worry about punctuation, spelling, grammar or any of those other writing tools that make you slow down and stop.

I have never tried that, I am or was an English teacher, I read and edit everything that I come in contact with even my own writing.  In fact I am editing now as I write this.  I think this is a near impossible task for someone that has been a word-checker, corrector, watcher, etc for more than 40 years.

For as long as I can remember, and probably before, I have been fascinated with the beauty of words.  They paint pictures of bald eagles floating in the wind, they bring out the color of the sky during a storm filled sunset.  They bring out the emotions as you read about the lives of others.  They make you laugh, cry, sing, want to shout “What Were You Thinking”.  They are magical and the placing of the words together is just inspiring if it is done right.

I think that if I were to actually be graded on the writing of this free writing challenge, I would fail.  I have gone back several times and corrected the words that I am writing, added punctuation, erased what I was typing and changed words all together.  I am finding it impossible to not correct what I am typing.

Please don’t give me a book or paper to read, I will edit it to pieces.  I will find that to that should be an it or that is that should be an in.  Please, I beg you, if you are writing a fiction story and decide to change your characters name half-way through please use the “Replace All” function in whatever writing program you use. The one in Word is awesome, and so easy to use.  It is so disconcerting to be reading along and Chad becomes Eric, or Mary becomes Sue.  I find myself when that happens re-reading the section so I can get my groove back and the speed of my reading back.  And then as I read along a little further, the character magically changes back to their other name.

I have been using this 500 words a day challenge to get back into the groove of writing.  I am not going to never work on my book but I think I have let the writing portion of my creativity have too much time off.  I find that I have lots and lots of words that want to be written, just not the ones that I need to write.  I will use this challenge as a platform to get me back into the writing habit.  Can you say procrastination.  If I write my 500 words here, I don’t have to worry about writing 500 words in my book.  I have covered that aspect of writing.

So where do I go from here in this free writing challenge?  I have not a clue, but I am hoping that the English teacher in me takes a break at one point and just lets me sit and write and not worry about adding a comma or a period or that I am creating a run on sentence and it is driving me nuts to not go back and correct it or add a stopping point letting everyone know that the 500 word free writing challenge has come to an end
