Cleaning Out Spaces

It is long over due, there is too much stuff taking up too much room.  I started tackling a room in my house that has a hodgepodge of stuff from every family member, I confess that most of it was mine.  These were things that we wanted to keep for some reason or another.  They just ended up in what we call the cat room but what was originally my oldest son’s room and then for a while a library just for me.  But eventually after putting all that stuff in it all that was left was just enough floor space for walking room to the kitty litter box.  I am just glad that it was mostly floor space level and we had not started not start piling boxes on top of boxes.  At least they weren’t more than two boxes high.

I have mostly found books, I admit it “I Am A Book Hoarder”.  I found books still in the bags from when they were bought.  With my memory I still remember when most of them were bought or what occasion was happening around the time they were bought.  I found a box of wall decor that was taken down several years ago when we repainted our living room but never replaced.  Funny, I can remember when and what year I bought the books but can’t remember what year we painted the living room.  We have been living in a living room with nothing on the walls for about 5 or 6 years, after this long, I don’t see us putting anything back up.  So those things were dusted off and they found their way into a box and have already been taken to Good Will.

Then I found a box of keepsakes, that are sentimental to me.  Some things in the box I have had since I was a child, others were from when I was in the Air Force and then there were some from students I taught in 2000.  I found several coffee mugs that these students gave me they must have thought I really needed coffee that year.  I finally put them on our kitchen counter for cleaning so we could start using them.  After 13 years, I think it is about time.  I don’t think I will ever go back to teaching, and these students are now around 27 or 28 years old.  I am sure that they barely remember me.  Mixed in with these items were gifts from professors, my children and my grandmother and pictures of my siblings when they were younger.  I sat down on my chair that I was using and just said “Lord, I can’t do it.  I can’t get rid of these things.”  So I sat them aside and intend to pack them up properly and store them properly.

Did I mention that I sat them aside on a TV?  Yep, one of those old TV’s from about 6  or 7 years ago that worked just fine until they changed everything.  Now it has been sitting back on the floor in the cat room gathering dust for just that long.  I am not sure what my hubby is going to be doing with that jewel.  He will probably end up taking it to the dump.  The strange part is that just behind that TV is a TV stand on which it could have been sitting but that is holding other stuff.  I will eventually make my way back to that, just need to wade through a few more boxes of memories that I am not sure what to do with.

Somethings were easy to get rid of, I just opened up that trash bag and in they went, others I set aside for a bit to decide on.  But it is amazing, my husband was able to make two trips to Good Will and one to the dump with the stuff I removed today.  I am surprising myself, I am trying to defeat the inner hoarder in me, that I never realized that I had.  It is really good to clean out the stuff, while doing that I am also cleaning out the memories.  Clearing up space for the memories of tomorrow instead of the memories of yesterday.

Ha ha. I love it. The cat room. Isn’t is funny the names we put on rooms. What are you hoping to use this room for once you clear it, or can you ever really imagine it cleared? I do love a trip down memory lane when I tackle stored stuff.

I want to use it as an art room, library, spare guest room. I have told my husband that I would like a really nice table or should I say a really old table, that I don’t mind spilling paint on when I explore painting. Right now I use my dining room table, which means that it never gets used to eat at and it is an antique, so I am afraid to paint on it.
