I picked up a book the other day by Robin Lee Hatcher, titled “Beyond the Shadows”, thinking that the title looked interesting.  So I put it in my bag without reading the back.

I had a few minutes in my car after work to sit for a minute to relax before starting the long drive home, so I took the book out of my bag and finally read the back.  “His secret addiction became her heartache…When Deborah discovers she is married to an alcoholic, she is faced with a life she never expected.  Somehow she must find courage and hope to step beyond the shadows.”  After I read this, I thought to myself there is no way I could ever read this book.  Her secret heartache is my secret heartache.  But you know, I want to know what choices she made to step beyond the shadows.  Did she make the same choices that I am struggling to make?  Did she stay?  Did she leave?  Did she just walk away with no place to go?

I wonder did she tell him she wanted him to leave only to see that her words fell on deaf ears?  Did she tell him she doesn’t love him anymore that all his lies and pretenses have torn that part of her heart apart?  That there was no trust there anymore?  I wonder if I read these pages will I be reading my own story?  Will the words be mine?  Will they help me to heal my broken heart?

I am getting ready to sit down with the book right now.  I have my box of Kleenex ready to go.  I will let you know how it works out.
